Teaching, okonomiyaki and origami…

It’s been a crazy busy week, and I’m really glad it’s the weekend! But, I’m enjoying it! Saturday is definitely my busiest, but also my best day at work. I have some really great classes, and some fantastic students. A whole range, from really intelligent kids who love to play games and solve puzzles, through to lovely women who enjoy chatting about just about anything.

I came out of a class just before my lunch ‘break’ and although I was tired and hungry, I felt really happy and had that feeling of ‘this is why I’m doing this’. I may be working stupidly hard, staying up really late fretting over lesson plans, and not really getting out as much as other people I know, but I’m here for the teaching too, not just Japan. And the teaching is great! It so wonderful to start a conversation in class and then stand back and watch the students chatting in English and having fun. They laugh, they enjoy themselves… and I helped to make that happen. It’s a lovely feeling.

At the end of the day on Saturday all the staff went out for some much needed ‘nominication’. ๐Ÿ˜‰ We went to a little okonomiyaki place nearby, and it was really great fun! I think it was the first time I really relaxed with my colleagues. I know them a little better now, and I felt like I could have a beer and chat with them quite happily. I tried Yebisu beer for the first time, and it was really tasty!

Okonomiyaki is one of my favourite Japanese foods. It’s a sort of omelette, I guess, with whatever ingredients you want to include. Sometimes in okonomiyaki places someone will come to your table and cook it in front of you, but in this place you had to cook it yourself! It was really good fun, and my colleagues showed me how to cook it and we all shared some different mixtures.

In our third and final combination, we tried Natto. Natto is kind of the marmite/vegemite of Japan – either you love it or hate it! I think it’s common for a lot of foreigners to really hate it… but I quite enjoyed it! Maybe it was just because it was disguised by the okonomiyaki though… I might have to try it again sometime on it’s own. Apparently it’s very good for women to eat. One of my colleagues has it every day for breakfast!

Whilst we were waiting for our food, one of my colleagues started making an origami crane out of her hand towel!

I was dead impressed, as I can’t even make one out of paper! haha! ๐Ÿ˜€
