日本語 の べんきょう – Lesson 12

おはようございます!

This week’s Japanese class was more about ~て form.  This week I learnt how to link sentences together using て.  It was vaguely familiar – I think perhaps I learnt it briefly before I left London, but a lot of that stuff is hazy now!

So, basically, if we have the following sentences:

私 は 8じ に おきました。 私 は かお を あらいました。  私 は ぎうにゅう を のみました。

I woke up at 8.00.  I washed my face.  I drank some milk.

We can combine these 3 sentences to make one sentence:

私 は 8じ に おきて、 かお を あらって、  ぎうにゅう を のみました。

I woke up at 8.00, washed my face and drank some milk.

This is really useful, and it helps to make what I say or write seem a little more natural! It’s much better than having all these “私 は”s all the time!

So the basic rule is that you change all the verbs to ~て form, except the last one, which you leave as ~ます form.

We also practiced giving reasons, which is something else I have done before but only remember vaguely.  For example:

どいして 日本語 を べんきょうしますか。

Why do you study Japanese?

おもしろいから。 日本語 を べんきょうします。

Because studying Japanese is interesting.

In the question, we can replace どうして with なんで to be more casual.  And in the response, we can switch the two parts around if we want to.

Culture tip…

My teacher knows I am interested in learning about real Japanese stuff too, so she often drops in little facts and curiosities for me.  This week, she taught me about ‘love love umbrella’.  You know how kids and teenagers often write on their school books and desks “I [heart] so-and-so”, well, in Japan, you get to share an umbrella with your sweetheart!

The kanji underneath the umbrella are the names of the two sweethearts!  I found a fun website about it too.  See here.

  1. I learned about the あいあい傘 in an art history class, while looking at this ukiyo-e piece.

    I’m not positive of the connection, whether sharing an umbrella had the same strong connotation of lovelove as it does now, or whatever, but I thought you might appreciate it.
