Fashion & Lolitas at Hyper Japan

Hyper Japan at Olympia Two in July was a great place to go if you have any interest in fashion. Not only was there a fashion show featuring emerging Japanese designers, there were also lots of amazing fashionistas to spot just walking around. In this post, I’ll focus on two things: the fashion show which took place on Saturday 23rd July, and Lolita fashion.

Emerging Japanese Designers Showcase

This fashion show featured three designers: Arisa Fukamoto, Doi, and Satoshi Date. They all had very different and distinct styles, and I found it interesting to see their designs.

Arisa Fukumoto is a London/Tokyo based Japanese designer. Her clothes and jewellery are inspired by flowers, classical ballet, and historical elements, and are a celebration of femininity. Her award-winning first collection, Wonderland, has been featured at London Design Festival and in several international magazines to date. Arisa loves the concept of nonsense and boundary of dream and reality; her concept of design is based on something a little bit different, something special. Fashion is fantasy; clothes can affect emotions and boost confidence, and even make you feel like a different person.” (Hyper Japan)

DOI is an elegant and powerful fashion brand, launched in London in 2006 by former fashion model Akemi Doi. Akemi’s vast experience on the catwalk has allowed her to cultivate an eye for selecting materials that are well fitting yet will flexibly wrap around the body to create superior comfort. Akemi also studied at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. Today, she bases herself in Munich and regularly travels to Milan, Paris and London. Through her designs of DOI, she strives to transmit Japan’s beauty to the world.” (Hyper Japan)

Satoshi Date is a graduate of Central St. Martins, is the Creative Director of fashion design label Satoshi Date, and has an impressive portfolio of participation in London and European fashion shows and exhibitions. Satoshi believes that clothes are a form of interaction. They give us the opportunity to see ourselves and appreciate how valuable we are, by creating a connection between aesthetic pleasure and our everyday lives. He cares about gentle colours and uses soft handmade techniques to stimulate the sense of touch.” (Hyper Japan)

Of all the designers, I think I liked Arisa Fukumoto’s fairytale-esque designs the best just because they were so pretty. I’m not sure any of them are clothes that I would actually wear, but I would quite like one of Doi’s jackets for special occasions. Satoshi Date had some interesting philosophies, but his designs weren’t as “Japanese” as the others, I felt.

Lolita fashion

Lolita fashion is something I’ve written about a few times on this blog, although it’s not something I would say I knew a lot about. It’s something which really intrigues me, and I often find myself wondering what kind of people get into Lolita fashion. I love some of the fabric designs, and I quite like the idea of buying expensive dresses and accessories to dress up in, just because you want to. I think if I was younger (and skinnier!) I might be quite tempted to give Lolita fashion a try. Here are some of the Lolitas I spotted over the weekend at Hyper Japan…

(Not sure if this last one counts as Lolita, but I just love this Hello Kitty dress!)

Thanks to everyone for letting me take your pictures! If I didn’t ask your permission and caught you in a crowd shot, thanks for being there! 🙂

I’d also like to ask any Lolitas reading this to leave a comment, if possible. I’d really like to know why and how you got into Lolita fashion, and what kind of reactions you’ve had from friends and family. And for those of you who are not into Lolita fashion, what do you think about it? Would you like to give it a try?

Please leave a comment below or answer the poll. Thanks. (*^^)v

  1. Loved the Arisa Fukumoto designs and the Lolita photos. What dedication! I checked “not for me” on the survey because for now, hairbows and reverting back to use a bit of glittery make up is as far as I can bring myself into the realms of cutesy. Though I won’t like–since moving to Korea I’ve deeply considered getting a few fun wigs.
