Working near Baker Street Station in London is proving to be very good, food-wise. There are a number of Japanese restaurants in the area, and here’s the first one I sampled…
Nambu-tei (なんぶ亭) is the best Japanese restaurant I have encountered in London so far. The food and atmosphere are completely authentic, and I really felt like I was in Japan while I was there. Unlike some Japanese restaurants in London, the staff all seemed to be Japanese and were happy to speak in Japanese with the customers.
It is a little pricey, but you get a lot of food for your money. The first time I went there I had a sushi set, which was just divine and totally filled me up. The second time, I ordered this amazing “unaju box” for £15:
It was a lot for lunch, really, but so delicious! The unagi (eel) was cooked perfectly – just like the eel in Shizuoka. I’d like to go there at night sometime and try something from their evening menu. The lunch and dinner menus both include sushi, and a variety of set meals. You can also eat sukiyaki, shabu shabu, nabe, udon, and many other dishes. They also have desserts, including green tea ice cream! 🙂
Nambu-tei is in Berkeley Arcade on Baker Street (NW1 6AB). The nearest station is Baker Street. Take the exit by Boots, and cross the street to find Nambu-tei.
