A-Z of Japan: X is for…

We’re down to the final three in my A-Z of Japan now, and it’s time for X. There was only one topic that came to mind for the tricky letter, so without further ado…

X is for… X Japan!

(X Japan Official Website)

X Japan (エックス ジャパン) are a Japanese heavy metal band. I’ll confess right now that I don’t know that much about them, but I’ve decided to do a bit of research this week and learn something new.

Before writing this post, one of the only things I knew about X Japan was that they had to be pretty famous because I’d seen a Hello Kitty doll done up like a member of X Japan on sale in a department store (along with pens, notebooks, plastic folders, etc.).

You know you’ve hit the big time when Sanrio want to do a collaboration with you!

X Japan began in the early 1980s, and that is evident in early pictures of them. Look at that hair!

One thing X Japan are famous for is the popular fashion style known as “visual kei” (ヴィジュアル系), literally “visual style”. They were one of the first bands to pioneer the style, as you can see in the photo above. These days, their style is a little more toned down:

But their fans still like to dress up:

X Japan actually played in the UK this June – I wish I could have gone, just for the experience! You can read more about the gig at the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire here.

X Japan’s first worldwide single was released in June this year, and is called “Jade“. It’s available to download from iTunes. Here’s the official promotional video:

Having listened to a little bit of X Japan’s music, I think I can safely say I would have liked them when I was a teenager. It’s not that I don’t like them now, but they’re a bit heavy for me. I think they have a cool style though, and I can certainly see the appeal.

Finally, all the photos in this post are borrowed from around the Internet. I have given links to the sources below each photo, and hope that no one minds me borrowing them. Thanks! (*^_^)v
