I’m lucky here in Bristol to work very close to two Japanese restaurants – Obento and Masa. I wrote about Obento a while ago, so today I thought I’d tell you about Masa. Masa, located on the corner of Baldwin Street and Queen Charlotte Street (BS1 1PN). It markets itself as ‘teppanyaki-style’ (where the diners sit at tables with hot plates on them, and chefs cook in front of them) and also has a sushi conveyor belt, but it was very quiet when I visited and I didn’t see any of that in action.
Despite how quiet it was and how few customers there were when I visited, the restaurant had a nice atmosphere. It was nicely decorated, and the staff were very friendly and polite.
I ordered a bento box, which came with salmon teriyaki, prawns, and seafood tempura. It also had a side of sticky rice and of course some miso soup.
Washed down with a glass of Asahi beer, it was a pretty good meal!
Of the two restaurants, I would probably say I prefer Obento’s food, but only a tiny bit. Both serve perfectly nice Japanese food, if a little basic and run-of-the-mill. I’d like to go back to Masa another time when it’s busier and see what the conveyor belt sushi and teppanyaki are like, though.
