The other week I wandered down to the Sunday market at the Tobacco Factory here in Bedminster and was delighted to find fresh sushi on sale! I had to try some of course, and was really pleased to discover that it was not only delicious, but also a little unusual. It was the aburi salmon that caught my eye…
It’s not often you see aburi salmon (lightly flame-grilled salmon) sushi here in the UK, and certainly not being sold in a street market in Bristol. I think the lovely lady running She Sells Sushi was as surprised to find someone who knew what aburi salmon was as I was to find it!
There were quite a few different types of sushi to choose from, and I’m afraid I didn’t quite catch all the ingredients. They were reasonably priced at 50p and £1 per item.
Or you could buy a box for £4.50 or £6.50.
I tried some aburi salmon (of course!), maki with little shrimp, a tempura uramaki, and an interesting caramelised cone thingy (I think this was ‘Sesame seed tuile filled with marinated Yellowfin Tuna’, having research on the She Sells Sushi website!) that was really rather lovely!
She Sells Sushi is, I think, a one-woman enterprise, appearing around the South West at various markets (check out her Market Diary here). I’ll certainly be going back another Sunday for some more sushi – yum!
