Postcard from Japan: Tohoku Rokkonsai (東北六魂祭)

Sorry I haven’t posted as many ‘postcards’ as I had hoped to – things have been rather hectic! However, I’m on holiday in Tohoku now, currently in Yamagata, and hoping to slow the pace down a little.

I’ve been planning this trip to Tohoku for the last three years, ever since the disaster in 2011, so arriving in Yamagata around 10am today was rather emotional. Yamagata wasn’t in my original plan, but it happens to be where this year’s Tohoku Rokkonsai (東北六魂祭) festival was being held. The festival took place yesterday and today, and I was thrilled to be able to attend today.

The Tohoku Rokkonsai festival brings together the main festivals from the 6 prefectures of Tohoku (Aomori, Akita, Morioka, Yamagata, Sendai and Fukushima) in one massive festival. I’m so lucky to have had the chance to attend – it was absolutely wonderful!

I’ll write more about the festival when I’m back in the UK but, for now, here are a couple of photos I took today (a tiny sample of the 500 or so snaps I took!).
